Red Companions to a z=2.15 Radio Loud Quasar
نویسنده
چکیده
We have conducted observations of the environment around the z=2.15 radio loud quasar 1550-269 in search of distant galaxies associated either with it or the z=2.09 CIV absorber along its line of sight. Such objects will be distinguished by their red colours, R-K>4.5. We find five such objects in a 1.5 arcmin field around the quasar, with typical K’ magnitudes of ∼20.4 and no detected R band emission. We also find a sixth object with K=19.6±0.3, and undetected at R, just two arcseconds from the quasar. The nature of all these objects is currently unclear, and will remain so until we have determined their redshifts. We suggest that it is likely that they are associated with either the quasar or the CIV absorber, in which case their properties might be similar to those of the z=2.38 red Lyα emitting galaxies discovered by Francis et al. (1997). The small separation between the quasar and the brightest of our objects suggests that it may be the galaxy responsible for the CIV metal line absorption system. The closeness to the quasar and the red colour might have precluded similar objects from being uncovered in previous searches for emission from CIV and eg. damped absorbers.

Gb1508+5714: a Radio-loud Quasar with Z=4.30 and the Space Density of High Redshift, Radio{loud Quasars
We report the discovery of a radio loud quasar with a redshift of 4.30. This object, which is the rst radio selected quasar with a redshift greater than four, was discovered during an observational investigation into the evolution of the luminosity function of radio loud quasars. Here we describe results based on a sample of 300, at spectrum radio sources with S 5GHz >200mJy. In this study, rat...

A sample of 103 quasars from the Large Bright Quasar Survey (LBQS) has been observed with the VLA at 8.4 GHz to study the evolution of the radio luminosity distribution and its dependence on absolute magnitude. Radio data from pointed observations are now available for 359 of the 1055 LBQS quasars. The radio-loud fraction is constant at ≈ 10% over the absolute magnitude range −28 ∼< MB ∼< −23, ...

Using a homogenous sample of 38,208 quasars with a sky coverage of ∼ 4000deg2 drawn from the SDSS Data Release Five quasar catalog, we study the dependence of quasar clustering on luminosity, virial black hole mass, quasar color, and radio loudness. At z < 2.5, quasar clustering depends weakly on luminosity and virial black hole mass, with typical uncertainty levels ∼ 10% for the measured corre...
متن کاملQso Environments at Intermediate Redshifts
We have made a survey of quasar environments at 0.5 ≤ z ≤ 0.8, using a sample of both radio-loud and radio-quiet quasars matched in B-band luminosity. Our observations include images of background control fields to provide a good determination of the field galaxy counts. About 10 per cent of the quasars appear to live in rich clusters, whereas approximately 45 per cent live in environments simi...
متن کاملA Search for High-redshift Quasars Among GB/FIRST Flat-Spectrum Radio Sources
We present the method and first results of a survey for high-redshift (z > 3) radio-loud quasars, which is based on optical identifications of 2902 flat-spectrum radio sources with S5GHz ≥ 25mJy. The radio sample was defined over a 1600 sq degree region using the 5GHz Green Bank survey and the 1.4GHz VLA FIRST survey. 560 sources were identified to a limit of E=19.5 on APM scans of POSS-I plate...
